My friend Eliza, her daughter and I were supposed to go to the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, but it's closed on Mondays. Who knew? It's so rare to find anything closed in Shanghai. No, I'm not being sarcastic. ("For a change", I can hear you all thinking.) Once we got over our shock, we decided to head over to the Shanghai Aquarium.
This post will be a little bit of a mixed bag, kind of like Shanghai itself. Some material is suitable for Friday Funnies, some more along the line of "No Spel Chek in Chian" (Coming soon! Goodness knows I have more than enough material to support it as a regular feature), while other photos would fit into the category of "Elizabeth Goofing Around" (Again, stay tuned for that one).
At any rate, here we go. The first exhibit room we were in had a waterfall feature.
Russian tourist at no extra cost.
Then we went to the Shark Room.
These cases held actual live shark embryos.
Freaky!
It wouldn't be China without the occasional typo.
Close to each other on the keyboard, but no cigar.
We passed through the South American exhibit, then on to the Australian.
Technically speaking, this is not a fish, but they had it in the Aquarium.
They also had swans in the same display!
This led me to ask myself, "I wonder
how many swans they go through in a day?"
until I noticed that the crocodile was a fake.
Next continent, Africa.
Miscellaneous pretty fishes
The Great White North
Brrrr!
The Jellyfish Room, replete with typical hyperbolic, cryptic Chinese signage.
Eerily beautiful.
Not me, the jellyfish! Thanks anyway.
Really. What do these mean?
Huge tank of sea life
The last display in the Aquarium was
an underwater viewing tunnel, the world's longest at 150 metres.
The travellator, a moving sidewalk, took us through.
Knowing it would be a long ride, I decided to take it easy.
Hey! That sign didn't say you couldn't lie down.
It was prohibiting something else.
Setting a bad example for Eliza's daughter who was in front of me
and providing Youku (Chinese version of Youtube) fodder for everyone else.
Thank you, Eliza, for getting the shots.
Under the sea (imagine the music from "The Little Mermaid")
You have to admit, this was a cool perspective.
Our last stop in the Shanghai Aquarium was the Gift Shop,
where their reason for existence was made fairly clear.
Although not our first choice, the Shanghai Aquarium did
prove to be quite entertaining.
